THE LETTERS OF
SAMUEL BECKETT |
XMAS WORKSHOPS

LET'S WALK & TALK
CA MARCHE ! |
|
Seminar.
This second volume of
The Letters of Samuel Beckett
opens with the war years,
when it was often impossible and dangerous to
correspond. The surge of letters beginning in 1945, and
their variety, are matched by the outpouring and the
range of Beckett's published work. Primarily written in
French and later translated by the author, the
work includes stories, a series of novels,
essays and plays – most notably
En attendant Godot.
The letters chronicle a passionately committed but
little known writer evolving into a figure of
international reputation, and his response to such fame.
With the support of the
Irish
Times and the
French Embassy in Ireland.

Talk.
LAN (Local Architecture
Network) was created by
Benoît Jallon
and
Umberto Napolitano in 2002,
with the idea of exploring architecture as an area of
activity at the intersection of several disciplines.
This attitude has developed into a
methodology enabling LAN to
explore new territories
and forge a vision encompassing social, urban,
functional and formal questions. LAN’s
projects seek to find elegant, contemporary answers to
creative and pragmatic concerns.
LAN
has received several awards, including in 2011 the LEAF
Awards with the Best Sustainable Development in
Keeping with its Environment prize.

Screening. Two gay men living in St. Tropez have
their lives turned upside down when the son of one of
the men announces he is getting married.
A study in high camp and chaotic hilarity,
La Cage aux Folles
became America's most successful foreign-language
film on its 1978 release. It was also the first gay
hit in film history. Much of its strength lies in
Edouard_Molinaro's
assured, frenetic direction, as well as in the
performances that he draws from his actors.
Michel_Serrault as Albin provides the film
with its heart and soul. Having performed the role
over 1700 times in the original stage version, he
inhabits Albin like a treasured article of clothing, a
well-worn and well-loved second skin. His portrayal
reflects the film as a whole: colourful,
high-strung, sometimes insufferable, but exceedingly
tender-hearted.

What do you do in Dublin?
I
work as a
novelist. I learn
French because my recent novel, The Sea and the
Silence, will be published in French by Gallimard
early next year.
What is it about the AF that you really like?
The AF is a welcoming corner of France in Dublin where
enthusiasts of France and things French, like myself,
can drop in and meet like-minded people.
What aspect of French culture do you most
enjoy?
Apart from the obvious, such as wine, food, climate and
so on, I think what I like most about France is the way
people relate to one another on an everyday level. There
is an engagement with shopkeepers, in restaurants and in
offices that is lively and courteous. I realise that
these are social conventions of everyday politeness, but
I just love being flirted with.
What do you hate about France or French culture?
Breakfast. The French don’t get it. They don’t seem to
understand that a croissant and coffee cannot sustain an
Irishman until lunchtime. In St Emilion I caused uproar
once by asking for a boiled egg at breakfast. Imagine
what would have happened had I asked for a kipper, which
is what usually follows my morning porridge.

Screening.
This quirky
romantic comedy follows the misadventures of two
socially inept characters trying to come together.
Pathologically shy Angélique (Isabelle
Carré) is encouraged by her support group to
turn her talent for chocolate into a career with a local
firm. Interviewed by company manager Jean-René (Benoît
Poelvoorde), who uses his fierce reputation
to mask his own awkwardness, Angélique is employed not
as a chocolatier, but as a vendor to local
merchants. Unexpectedly taken with his new employee,
Jean-René is advised by his therapist to ask her to
dinner, setting the scene for
comic misunderstandings,
visual gags,
and even
musical numbers.
Winning performances
from the two leads make for an
irresistibly charming and touching film.
