Exhibition. Gilles Perrin's People of the sea is an exhibition of documentary photographs of the Irish Fishing industry. These large format black and white images often presented as diptychs and triptychs capture the lives of people working in maritime industries around the Cork coastline. Gilles Perrin selected his subjects by visiting harbours and piers in locations such as Cobh, Baltimore, Castletownbere and Schull through the Artist in residency programme at Sirius Arts Centre and later by a similar residency position at the West Cork Arts Centre which took place over a few months in 2007 & 2008.
In partnership with
Veolia Environnement with the support of Sirius Arts Centre, The Arts Council, Cork County Council and The West Cork Arts Centre, and iophotoworks.

J'ENTENDS UN PIANO DANS MA RUE - MORGAN COOKE BOARD GAMES
EVENING
L'ÉVOLUTION DU RUGBY
JEAN-MICHEL AGUIRRE

Concert. The Alliance Française in Kilkenny presents  the actor and musician Morgan Cooke.

Morgan lived for six years in Paris, eking out a living as a classical singer in chamber choirs by day, and a white-faced underground cabaret singer at night, while also working as an accompanist for many artists. It was as a singer that he really explored the milieu, trawling through the old songs of Fréhel, Marie Dubas and Boris Vian with a drag outfit called Los Lolos De Paris, and blazing a trail of new cabaret in the darkly comic guignol world of Cook The Linaar. On 9 November in the Hole in the Wall, Kilkenny you will hear songs from both of those shows, along with Morgan's favourite choices from the repertoire of Barbara, Jacques Brel, Serge Gainsbourg and of course, Édith Piaf.

9 November 2011 at 8.30pm
Admission: €10 / €5 AF members

Workshop. Each workshop will be dedicated to a different aspect of the French phonetic system.
The aim of these workshops is to introduce the trainees to these aspects of the language, giving them tricks to help them pronounce the sounds and an understanding of how they should be performed.

Leaving Cert students: Did you know that pronunciation represents 25% of the marks in the oral examination? That means that a good student, who has plenty of vocabulary but poor pronunciation, is starting with a handicap that represents 1/4 of the total mark. This workshop is for teenagers aged 13-17.

MAX BOUBLIL
STAND UP COMEDY
EUROZONE - WAITING
FOR GODOT?
BEAUJOLAIS
NOUVEAU 2011

Show. This comedian came to fame mainly through Youtube. In May 2010 he started putting new satirical and ironic songs such as J’aime les moches, Susan Boyle or Chanson raciste on the Net.

Adept at using irony in embarrassing situations and poking fun at his subjects, Max Boublil started his career in supporting roles in a few French series which unfortunately proved unsuccessful. But rapidly (and fortunately) he found the recipe to make us laugh and sing at the same time. And finally here he is, for YOU, in Dublin.

He will tell us about his new-found fame, what cyber celebrity has brought him and also how everyday life inspires him.

Sunday 13 November– 8pm
€18.30 / €12 AF members
Tickets can be purchased at the Alliance Française Reception

Talk. We have been waiting for quite some time for a sense of a definitive European response to the Eurozone crisis. Rather like waiting for Monsieur Godot, we are not sure that such a response will ever arrive. The theme of this address will be to argue why decisive steps must be taken now.
Pat Cox
is an Irish politician, he was President of the European Parliament from 2002 to 2004 and served as a member of the European Parliament from 1989 to 2004. Before this Pat Cox was a journalist and presenter with RTÉ's Today Tonight and then a  TD for Cork South Central. He is now the President of the European Movement International and the President of the Alliance Française Dublin.

Training. How to use authentic documents in class: the song as a cultural basis and a pedagogical tool. In this workshop especially dedicated to secondary school French teachers, we will see how a song may be used as a tool to help develop language practice and cultural awareness, through written, aural and oral activities.

This workshop will be lead by Cécile Dubois, teacher in the Alliance Française in Dublin who has just joined our team after several years in different Alliances Françaises in Europe.

Workshop. Nothing is more important than building a world in which all our children will have the chance to use their full potential and to grow healthy in peace and dignity - Kofi A. Annan

The idea of this workshop is to give children the opportunity to express their sense of freedom to create a colourful body silhouette shape which will be named “The Little Keeper”. This workshop is lead by Rony Sidon, a Guadeloupean artist living in Ireland for the last 14 years. He studied Fine Art for five years between the Caribbean and Toulouse and worked in a number of places in Ireland and developed an intuitive approach to sharing his passion of colours.

Screening. Alain Cavalier is a French film director who cuts a distinctive figure. He has won several awards, including the César Award for Best Film and César Award for Best Director for his film Thérèse in 1987. His latest film Pater premiered in Competition at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.
In Pater he explores a filial relationship between a man who casts himself as President of the Republic, and his choice for Premier, a much younger man. Alain Cavalier plays the president, a warm and inquisitive character much like his own. Vincent Lindon is the filial figure, brooding, questioning, inhabited by doubts. Pater was shot with a handheld digital camera and the audacity of a pioneer.
Introduced by Laurent Marie, French lecturer at UCD.

Screening. Bertrand Blier's 1979 Buffet Froid is an absurd black comedy that cunningly reverses the conventions of the crime thriller to comment on the alienating and dehumanizing effects of contemporary urban life through the adventures of three men.

First introduced is Alphonse Tram (Gérard Depardieu), an unemployed young man. His only neighbour is the police chief-inspector Morvandieu (Bernard Blier). Then a third man appears : he is Alphonse's wife's murderer (Jean Carmet).

Strange and unreal, a classic Blier that won a César Award for Best Writing.

What do you do in Dublin? I am a solicitor engaged in Human Rights law at the Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice. This currently involves legal research into aspects of Penal Policy in Ireland, Immigration Law and Human Rights law.
What is it about the AF that you really like?
The opportunity for interaction with people who are looking at the world from a different cultural perspective.
What aspect of French culture do you most enjoy?
Food of course! As a lawyer who has completed the Diploma in Legal French I am fascinated by what might be called the underpinning philosophy of law – a search for just relations.
What do you hate about France or French culture?
I do not hate any one aspect of French life or culture. And if there is something that I "dislike" or that makes me feel uncomfortable it is that sense of being unique, special, different, which can be both annoying and attractive all at the same time.

Exhibition. After last year's success, submissions are being sought again from artists working in Ireland with a particular interest in photography, for a new exhibition in Spring 2012 inspired by the particular multi-use context of our Gallery which is also a café space.

Artists will be shortlisted by the Advisory Committee of the Gallery of the Alliance Française and a winner will be selected from the entries chosen for the exhibition.

In 2011, Joby Hickey, Doreen Kennedy, Roseanne Lynch & Jean-Luc Morales were selected to exhibit  at the AF and our first Award was given to Roseanne Lynch. See the details here.

Submissions deadline extended to 1 December 2011
