FRENCH COURSES TERM 3
5th FEBRUARY 2007  /  2nd JUNE 2007

We are organising few more assessments for latecomers for our new Term starting on the 5th of February. Classes will include General French courses, conversation courses, cultural workshops, teenagers courses and children courses. The extra assessments   will   be   held   between   10am   and

12noon on Saturday 3rd, and between 5pm and 7pm on Monday 5th, Tuesday 6th and Wednesday 7th. Assessments are free of charge and no booking is required. Please note that you don't need an assessment if you are a complete beginner or a teenager. You can download the Timetable here and the enrolment sheet there.

5th JAMESON INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
16 - 25 FEBRUARY 2007

Festival. A world of movies returns to Dublin for the 5th Jameson Dublin International Film Festival. The event will present new feature films from all continents, along with retrospectives and special seasons making it the biggest film event in Ireland with 100 feature films, shorts, discussions, special guests, events and the odd surprise!

Some highlights include: John Carney's Once, a modern-day musical set in Dublin, Robert Quinn’s Cré Na Cille, the first ever Irish language feature film in the Festival, Woody Allen's Scoop, Colour Me Kubrick on the making of Eyes Wide Shut starring John Malkovich, a special preview of Lars Von Trier’s black comedy The Boss of it All, Zhang Yimou's epic Curse Of The Golden Flower, a special screening of Fritz Lang's masterpiece Metropolis which will be accompanied by 3epkano with a special orchestral arrangement at the National Gallery.

With the support of the French Embassy in Ireland many French films will be shown this year, including Patrice Leconte's Mon meilleur ami, Daniele Thompson's Fauteuils d'orchestres, Guillaume Canet's Ne le dis à personne, or Philippe Pilard's documentary Neil Jordan, Portrait.

Complete festival programme, memberships and tickets will be available from February 1st.

CARLOS DE MAGALHAES
PAINTINGS

Exhibition. Painter, Sculptor, Poet and Lecturer in Experimental Art, Carlos de Magalhães is a Brazilian national and has exhibited extensively in Brazil for the last 30 years.
He has also exhibited in France, Switzerland, Portugal, Uruguay, and Ireland where he was artist in residence in Cill Reillig, Co Kerry, in 2006. Some of his work is held in private collections in the USA, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Spain and Ireland.
The theme of his current work is “Man reduced and represented through signs”, the visual essence capable of communicating a human posture through signals revealing the human soul and its horizons.

NICOLAS FEVE
OMEY

Exhibition. Born in Lyons in 1970, Nicolas Fève first entered a darkroom when he was nine. His interests lie primarily in the relationship between text and image. His first solo exhibition in Ireland was Between the lines / Entre les lignes at the Alliance Française in Dublin in 2004. He has since participated in group exhibitions in the Temple Bar Gallery and in the William Frank Gallery. His new exhibition Omey was first shown in 2006 at the Clifden Arts Week  before moving to the Galway City Museum. It is comprised of photographs taken over the last eight years, following Nicolas’ move to Ireland in 1998. Nicolas is also currently working on a large-scale project entitled Quotations, which examines photography as an act of speech and the photograph as a page.

GENERAL MEETING

Special Events. The Alliance Française organises an Open-day twice a year. This is the chance to meet some of our staff and get information on our courses, exams and cultural events. All official brochures will be available.

The Annual General Meeting of the Members of the Alliance Française in Dublin will meet on Monday 26th of February at 6pm. Members will hear the Annual Report of the Company and be asked to vote on various subject such as the budget for the forthcoming year, the agenda or the replacement of members of the Board of Directors. The meeting will be followed by a reception to recover from all the hard work !

SHAN SA
READINGS

Conference. Shan Sa is a prominent Francophone novelist, born in China in 1972. At only seven years old she decided to devote herself to writing and five years later, she won First Price at the National Children Poetry Contest in China.

Terrified by the events of Tian An Men in 1989, she left her country for Paris.
There she studied philosophy, published six novels in French and won the Prix Goncourt gaining critical acclaim worldwide. Two of her novels have been translated into English and are the subject of major movie productions.

Shan Sa will give two readings in the framework of the EIGSE 2007 Literature Festival in Cork :
- French reading on Thursday 22 February, 4pm in University College Cork.
- English reading on Saturday 24 February, 9pm at the Triskel Art Centre, Cork.

CONCOURS D'ÉCRITURE
INTERNATIONAL

Lyrics Contest. Fusaca and Accord Productions, in partnership with the Alliance Française de Paris, SACEM, the National Commission for UNESCO, the Conseil Régional de Basse-Normandie and the city of Caen, are organising for the second consecutive year the Chanson sans Frontières Competition.

Write a text in French of three verses long with a chorus, on a sheet of paper, on the theme Mais où est ton pays ? (but where is your country?). Send your text by post, along with the application form, before 31 March 2007 to the address below:

The prizewinner will win a week’s all expenses paid holiday to France for two and will see his text adapted by a French singer. Participation is free.

FRANCO-IRISH LITERARY
FESTIVAL 8th EDITION

Festival. Now a significant date in Dublin’s annual literary calendar, The Franco-Irish Literary Festival organised by the Alliance Francaise and the Cultural Service of the French Embassy, will be held for the eighth consecutive year on the 27th, 28th, and 29th of April 2007 in Dublin Castle.

Once again Irish, French and European writers will present their work and discuss a subject. This year topic is : Talking about Islands, A propos des Iles…. This theme was chosen as a tribute to Michel Déon who is the Guest of Honour of the Festival. The festival will feature round-table discussions, public interviews, readings and, of course, the popular Literary Brunch on Sunday morning to close the festival.

Workshops

Workshops are ideal for people who wish to practise their French while focusing on a particular aspect of French Culture. The Alliance provides courses on the following subjects : cinéma, littérature, musique, civilisation, photographie, histoire de l'art, actualités, traduction, régions francaises, monde du vin, commerce, et tourisme. They can be combined with a general French class for a more innovative way of learning French !
