Édito
Très bonne année 2012 ! All the team wish you a Happy New Year full of nice and exciting surprises, hoping that we will contribute to these. This month, to get off to a great start we have a talk on caricature in Québec and La dictée which will give you the opportunity to practise your French while sharing the Galette des rois! We also welcome three fantastic musicians, both Irish and French, for an evening of Celtic music. Is there a better way to start another year of Franco-Irish friendship?

Talk. Using slides and drawing as he goes, editorial caricaturist A-P. Côté will show the many facets of his practice which have resulted in publication both at home and abroad. Since 1997 he has been the editorial caricaturist at Le Soleil, Quebec’s daily paper. His caricatures are often reprinted in Montreal’s daily paper La Presse and in Courrier International (Paris).
Also using slides, M. Falardeau, co-author of Histoire de la caricature au Québec, will explain how, since its origins in the 19th century up until today, Quebec has been at the forefront of the spread of strong humorous and popular language which allows it to preserve its original culture.

LA DICTÉE
(AND GALETTE DES ROIS!)
IMPROVE YOUR PRONUNCIATION CHILDREN's WORKSHOP:
GALETTE DES ROIS

Special Event. You may well know of the French tradition whereby schoolchildren practise dictation to perfect their spelling. This custom has been resurrected by Bernard Pivot, a well-known presenter of literary programmes, for the enjoyment of amateurs of our beautiful language throughout the world. Now the Alliance Française Dublin plans to renew this tradition without the stress of going back to school! We invite you to come and practise your writing skills while discovering a text of some 200 words drawn from French literature. You will be the only judge of your work, so don’t be afraid to come along and join us for this enjoyable evening open to all (learners and native-French speakers). It will also offer us the chance to share some galette des rois!

Thursday 12 January 6pm
Admission free RSVP

Workshop. Each workshop will be dedicated to a different aspect of the French phonetic system.

The aim of these workshops is to introduce the trainees to these aspects of the language, giving them tricks to help them pronounce the sounds and an understanding of how they should be performed.

While the art of phonetics is very important, its practice, in groups of 12 trainees maximum, is fun and the best way to learn is with vocal games and tongue-twisters.

Leaving Cert students: Did you know that pronunciation represents 25% of the marks in the oral examination?

Workshop. Did you know that Christmas itself is not the only highlight over the festive season in every culture?
The Spanish, for example, also hold celebrations for the Three Wise Men who brought presents on the 6th January!

However, in France, on this day, we celebrate the Épiphanie, the return of the Wise Men, by eating the famous Galette des Rois.

This workshop offers children from 6 to 11 years old an introduction to the stories of the Epiphany in France such as Roule-Galette as well as numerous games, Arts & Crafts and of course a tasting of the real Galette des Rois!

What do you do in Dublin?I am the director of Ireland Literature Exchange, the state-funded organisation which promotes Irish literature abroad. We’ve just supported French translations of Flann O’Brien’s The Best of Myles and Joseph O’Connor’s Ghostlight.
What is it about the AF that you really like? I love the atmosphere – it’s a lovely, informal little piece of France in Ireland. I think the new café, La Cocotte, is a great place to meet and enjoy simple, but delicious French food. I also very much enjoy my conversation class it can get very animated at times!
What aspect of French culture do you most enjoy? What I love most about French culture is the ability of the French to be both intensely French with a very strong sense of cultural identity, and yet truly cosmopolitan at the same time.I also love the way French society places a high value on culture and that French people are simply not afraid to introduce protectionist measures to defend something important to us all, like the survival of independent bookshops.
What do you hate about France or French culture? Gosh, I don’t know – I really am Francophile so I don’t think there is anything I hate!

Debating Competition. The Joutes Oratoires, established in 1990, is a French-language debating competition for second level schools in Ireland. Forty schools participate each year. The object of the competition is to promote excellence in debating skills in the French language. The Franco-Irish debate (of which this is the seventh) provides the Irish students with a unique opportunity to showcase their linguistic skills. This year, a team of four students selected from the National Competition will debate, in French, against a team of students from the Lycée Paul Claudel. The event will take place at the Centre Culturel Irlandais.

The event is organised under the auspices of the Alliance Française Dublin and is sponsored by the Ireland Fund of France in association with the Ardagh Group.

CHOIR
CINÉCLUB: JOURNAL D'UN CURÉ DE CAMPAGNE

Screening.  A favourite at Cannes and now a frontrunner for an Academy Award, this loving recreation of the glory days of silent cinema is an utterly captivating entertainment in its own right. Although in black and white, shot in the old Academy 4:3 screen size, and with title cards for the dialogue, we quickly adjust to such unfamiliar authenticity because leading man Jean Dujardin’s charismatic allure draws us in completely. It also puts him right at home in old Hollywood where he plays silent idol George Valentin, a swashbuckling sensation until the coming of sound changes everything. Director Michel Hazanavicius brings us romance, obsession, glamour – to make us fall in love with the movies all over again.

Screening. Based on a novel by Georges Bernanos, Diary of a Country Priest (1951) is the first film in director Robert Bresson’s so-called “prison trilogy” (followed by Pickpocket and A Man Escaped). Bresson’s intensely personal style, minimalist approach to dialogue and music, and use of non-professional actors marked a new kind of filmmaking, which was to influence such diverse screewriters and directors as Paul Schrader, Terrence Malick or  Andrei Tarkovsky.
The film begins with the arrival of a young, sickly priest (Claude Laydu) at the godless parish of Ambricourt in Northern France. Here he becomes drawn into the complex domestic life of a wealthy Count, his tormented wife, his manipulative daughter and his mistress, Miss Louise.
